And I am VERY judgmental, Ark, but excuse me, "ignorant" and "embarrassing" aren't four-letter words. I have no expectation of October ever changing her mind but I will not allow such statements as she made to stand unchallenged. Why should I have to? Just where is your sense of fairness, Ark? LH...what ark is suggesting is that you learn to differentiate between refuting a concept or assertion without launching into disrespect of the person who puts forth the concept or assertion. You have done this on other threads as well. If you believe a statement to be uninformed, the respectful tact is to try and address in what way...not call the poster "ignorant". Again, as ark said, this site is all about learning to communicate with someone you don't agree with without destroying their relationship with you. You appear to be a bright and passionate man. Don't force people to put you on "ignore". Low

So, "illiterate" is okay, but "ignorant" isn't. Curious. BTW, I can decipher implications in your words, October. Also, President Bush has an Economics degree from Yale and a MA in Business from Harvard. You call that illiterate? And I get my words out of order and make some up too. So what? How is that an indicator of intelligence?
I repeat. Lock this thread greycloud. It should be.

UTC is the time in Greenwich, 0-23
Here are some conversations that feature the strawman.
BOB: I read a column that says the Iraq war is a giant con job.
ANN: No doubt written by one of those "Michael Moore" types. I don't pay attention to those loony liberals. They all hate America! They're just like Osama!
Here's another one.
SAM: My favorite candidate says he doesn't like abortion.
TED: Oh, that candidate is just a crazy fundie! I shall dismiss everything she says. Those fundies are all off their rockers. They're the same as Osama!

OG ~ OT threads are usually not a big deal. But when you start one with a personal attack, and no it wasn't funny: And to those who voted for Bush all I can say is "What were you thinking?" The smiley face tongue thing didn't make it better. Ark, for once, I think you are going after the wrong person.

I vote for Ahhhhnold because he has big muscles !!! I can see the re-election slogans now..."A'll Be Bahkk" Wonder what kind of Commando one-liners he could come up with when he single-handedly invades North Korea! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Low, when I started posting out here, after lurking for a long, long time, I warned people I call spades by their true name of shovels. This website is about strong, proactive action too. I guess I'll go back to prefacing any remarks I make with the warning that spades are indeed shovels and the reader should ignore everything below that if they can't handle that.

I don't think President Bush is the cause of the downward spiral of our country. I believe it takes more than one person to do that. I think it started long before he became President and I believe it is do to the moral decline of our people and the acceptance of doing wrong being ok to justify the means. Our values have declined over many years.
I believe it is the ones who say it doesn't matter what we do morally as a people that have turned this country on the downward spiral.
I also have to ask people who complain what have they done to turn things around? OG this isn't directed at you but at people in general. What are they willing to sacrifice to make this a better place. I know what our military people and their families sacrifice in order to preserve our freedoms? Are others willing to sacrifice their life so the person next to you can say whatever they want no matter what. I hear what teachers tell students in class on ways of avoiding selective service, getting out of jury duty, and how our military is just made up of people brainwashing young guys to make them killing machines. But yet these teachers would not sacrifice their comfort to help others in trouble.
I believe unless we are all contributing in some way to making this a better place than we are all just as guilty as anyone else in the downward spiral of this nation.

Bramblerose..
I am not going after anyone...... I am a huge advocate of this board though...and its principles..
I have no problem with OT things I have no problems with debates though I need to refrain from them much more than I do cause I think they can distract from people who need 'help'
I only saw what were you thinking...as an invitation as to say exactly what I was thinking when I voted for GW twice..mind you...
I didn't see it as a personal attack...cause since I pulled the lever...I can certainly articulate why I did it... but the outright you are ignorant comments can be hurtful...in my opinion....
and until pep even said something...I never even blinked at that comment...
BUT still people should free to tell octobergirl exactly what they were thinking...but as far as I am concerned do so without calling her A N Y T H I N G...

Ark, it strikes me you think "ignorant" is a synonym for "stupid." If you do, I never use it in that context. It simply means "uninformed." Would that word be more acceptable to you?

"What were you thinking"
Isn't that what Dr. Phil says?
That's what I thought of when I read it..
Of course, I didn't need to consider an answer since I did not vote for George Bush.
I do believe in voting because it is a right that has been provided to us as American citizens.
However, I'm not that PASSIONATE about politics...
I'm one of the ones who votes based on how a candidate comes across to me...
I do question his level of intelligence and also his integrity..
He just doesn't seem to sincerely care IMHO..especially about the poor and downtrodden people in America...
This was validated for me in his response to Katrina in New Orleans...
I have tried to sense the sincerity and integrity that others speak of but I can't pick up on it....
He seems to carry a smirk on his face....
I made it happen..a joyful life..filled with peace, contentment, happiness and fabulocity.

Just a statistic:
Pearl Harbor Dec, 7 1941. 2400 Americans dead
Sept. 19, 2001 attacks. 2996 reported dead or missing.
WWII 408,306 Americans dead
Iraq 2,229 Americans dead As of 1-23-06
I have spoken to about a dozen military men that have seen action in Fallujah, Bagdad and Tikrit. When I asked them about what was happening in Iraq, they told me,that what they have personally seen and what they have read and seen in the media are very different. It makes many of them angry that the media misses so much of what is going on over there.
I asked them because they are the ones that have the most to lose and have first hand knowledge.
Just thought it might be worth sharing.

Also,I don't see anyone have a problem with Melody and her telling us to shaddup and calling us silly dumb yankees. It's in jest and not meant to harm. That is correct that its done in jest; it's done affectionately and people understand that. But saying "what were you thinking" followed by a Bush bashing TIRADE is not meant in jest, much less affectionately. "what were you thinking" = you are stupid. You know it and we know it. You are not jesting about your hatred towards Bush, which is why your comment "what were you thinking" is so offensive. Isn't this board traumatic enough without picking political fights?
