I've been as guilty as anyone else starting OT threads over the past 5 1/2 years here. My defense is that all of them, I think, have been generically humorous (or intended to be). No politics, no religion > the stuff of controversy on a forum. It'll bring out the worst in people.

I suggest that we try to keep this forum neutral of polarizing topics - we all know what they are. Heck, we've got enough "crap" to deal with here with infidelity!

This IS an infidelity forum. Infidelity cuts across ALL societal stratifications, all international boundaries, all beliefs. It is thusly a common ailment, one that ALL can help deal with - no matter how screwed up your politics or religion is.

Mel;

Although not said "nicely", maybe O Girl wants to know why so many people USED TO support Bush...

I've wondered that myself...

But you are right, there's already enough trauma around here without political discussions..

I made it happen..a joyful life..filled with peace, contentment, happiness and fabulocity.

And maybe she simply wants to pick a political fight generated by her own emotional issues about Bush.

I warned people I call spades by their true name of shovels.

Just to let you know...the idiom "Calling a spade a spade" has its roots in the Greek for "calling a bowl a bowl", meaning to 'tell it like it is'. It was mistranslated into Latin at a later date. It has nothing to do with shovels.

My point is that you have demonstrated that you were not informed of this, yet I refrain from calling you "ignorant". I've simply informed you of your error.

O-girl, It's called a "Google-bomb" Google's special, and remarkably effective search algorithm does a relational ranking, and during the last election many people hyperlinked to the Whitehouse's website with the words "Miserable Failure." The Funny thing, of course, is that had Kerry won, HE would be the person that pops up because of the way the algorithm works.

For what it's worth, and I don't know it it's still true, but for a while, Kerry's website was the first listing when a person would search on "Flip-Flop" or "Waffle." My suggestion to call him the "Snobby-Giggolo-Traitor Dwarf" never really caught on...

But, I WAS ignorant about that, Low. So what? I also don't really care about those bowls, but that's beside the point. I often ask people out here to educate me. No big deal.

Can’t you see you're criticizing me on the appearance of my words, not the substance? Can’t you see how wrong that is? Her words were prettied up, in the style you like, but they were no less inflammatory. What you’re saying, in effect, is you can be as vicious as you want as long as you use the words you feel are “nice” words. I’m saying that’s not true. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree again.

No, no...I'm not. What I'm saying is that we can communicate without attacking each other's ancestry if we so choose. They don't have to be nice words.

Attack the IDEA and not the person who is stating it. Things like telling a person they are "ignorant" does carry the connotation of "stupid" despite the lack of technical equivalency.

For example, saying "That's the dumbest thing I've heard today!" may be harsh, but is very different from saying "It's dumb liberals like you that cause our problems." I know you see the difference...you're a smart man (I mean that sincerely)

Do not look for ways to discredit the idea's proponent so much as the idea itself. It reflects poorly on you because it is a schoolyard bully tactic. We're older than that, and hopefully we've outgrown that propensity.
