Aloha Believer,

Thanks for thinking of us. There are at least 4 of us out here. Twyla, Leilana, Steadfast&Committed & me.

We are not suppose to be in the path of Flossie but one never knows. Been putting stuff away, just in case.

The weather is a bit humid and weird. Nothing to put my finger on, maybe we will see a change tomorrow.

Will keep you posted.

Aloha,
L.

Orchid - I didn't realize anyone else lived there..... I thought it was just YOU!!!!!!! Anyway, be safe and cautious. I just saw the latest, and they are hoping the main part (135 mph winds) will miss you, but there is still the tropical storm. Hope it will stay far away.

Here's what I learned:

[color:"red"]Tuesday August 14, 2007 8:01 AM

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - An earthquake on Monday jolted the Big Island of Hawaii, which is already under a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning.

The magnitude 5.3 temblor struck at 7:38 p.m. local time, about 25 miles south of Hilo, according to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no reports of injuries, structural damage, or a tsunami, although the quake did cause a small landslide, according to Tom Brown, a spokesman for Hawaii County Civil Defense.

Earlier Monday, the weather service placed the Big Island under a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning, as Hurricane Flossie approached. A flash flood watch was also issued for the island through Wednesday.

HONOLULU (AP) — Hurricane Flossie weakened to a Category 3 storm Monday with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph as it roared toward Hawaii, but it was expected to pass less than 100 miles from the islands.

The weather service placed the Big Island under a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning. A flash flood watch was also issued for the island through Wednesday, with possible flash flooding in areas.

Gov. Linda Lingle signed an emergency disaster proclamation, which activates the Hawaii National Guard. Mayor Harry Kim also declared a state of emergency Monday as a precaution. All 56 public schools, as well as private schools, on the Big Island also were closed for Tuesday.

The Big Island is largely rural, with about 150,000 people, and most live in the west or northeast, not the southern portion expected to be hit hardest by the hurricane. Other islands are expected to get much less of the storm's wind and rain.

At 2 a.m. EDT, Flossie was about 295 miles south-southeast of Hilo and 500 miles southeast of Honolulu, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said. The storm was moving west-northwest at about 16 mph.

Hurricane force winds of at least 74 mph extended outward up to 40 miles from the center of the storm, while tropical storm force winds of at least 39 mph extend outward up to 140 miles.

Meteorologists cautioned that even a slight change of course in the unpredictable storm could take it closer to land.

So for now we are just waiting.

Orchid, tell Twyla to get the razor out and trim all those back hairs....less wind drag....lol.

Seriously, I hope all of you, and all on the islands, will be kept safe as Flossie "Passes My Sanctuarys" on her way to calmer waters.

Hi Orchid,

I'm praying for you and thanks for confirming you received a call from our friend Mishes. They may be under a hurricane watch, too....on the SE coast.

FH.....you are so funny. BTW, I don't think you've posted to my fun thread....maybe not even you, Orchid.

Please check it out on the recovery forum "50 Something (+ or -) Thread. Chrisners video link is really cool and I'd appreciate your input on the analogy posted subsequently.

Again, I hope ol' Flossie PMSs away from you, too.

Flossie = PreMaelstrom Syndrome (or the consequences of a bag of hot air being left alone on the ocean, or maybe anger over being 'abandoned' with no other bag of hot air to merge with?)

Ace, I'll check it out when I have a little time on my hands.

Yikes!

An earthquake AND a hurricane?

OK, is it just me or does the name Flossie sound sort of um sissyish? I picture a fluffy little poodle when I hear that.

Hoping and praying Flossie will be tame...

Hurricane, Earthquakes.... I can handle but PMS!??!?!? YIKES!!! Well at least not for me but WATCH OUT PELE!!! Yea, there's been a few rumblings from her too! The Big Island is really getting the full brunt of these natural disasters.

Unless Flossie makes a turn and heads east, after she passes the big island and before she passes Kauai, we'll be ok. Could get a bit windy.... it is a bit suspenseful but we needed some excitement. The tourists are getting bored. They want to see more than just hearing stories about the nightly 'green flash'.

Believer,

It must have been my "south'rn" accent that confused you. I can actually stand on my roof, throw a rock, and the house I hit is about 3 miles from Orchid.

Well, gotta go tie down the dog just in case.

Blessings.

Well, hope y'all ride out the storm okay. They say it is very close, but might miss if it keeps going in the right direction. They are talking about maybe 20 inches of rain. Here in San Diego county we only have 10 inches of rain a year. Get out your boats!!!!!!!!

I do understand there are going to be some nice waves......

Hey SNC, why is there a huge lava rock in my back yard!?!!? Are you trying to show off your muscles again? Gotz the initials SNC on it!

NO waves yet, just getting a little windy. Cloud mustering up on the windward side (eastern side of the island). We are on the leeward (west side). If Flossie takes a turn she will smack right dab into our side of the island.

Here's what I found:

[color:"blue"]The storm comes on the heels of a 5.4-magnitude earthquake centered 25 miles south of Hilo. The quake Monday night caused a small landslide, but there were no reports of injuries or structural damage, said Tom Brown, a spokesman for Hawaii County Civil Defense.

More than two dozen aftershocks followed, the largest measuring magnitude 3.2, said Jim Kauahikaua, scientist in charge at the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

At 11 p.m. EDT, Flossie was about 155 miles south of Hilo and 305 miles southeast of Honolulu, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said. The storm was moving west-northwest at about 8 mph.

Hurricane-force winds of at least 74 mph extended outward up to 40 miles from the center of the storm, while tropical storm force wind of at least 39 mph extend outward up to 105 miles.

I understand it is now a category 2 but a category nonetheless. So things are still rockin' and a rollin' on da' Big Island. That's where my family's from.... Got 2 uncles and a few cousin's out there. I think they are ok.

They are making sure they've got lots of spam musubi, teri-BBQ stick meat, chili, rice, potato/mac salad, ocean salad, poke, kimchee fried rice, chicken katsu, green river punch, lilikoi juice, sushi, lomi salmon, huli-huli chicken, mochi.... oh now I'm getting hungry. LOL!!! Yea....when the weather gets rough, since we can't surf, we eat!!! Some of us just eat anyways. Oh yea....plus batteries, water and toilet paper....that's the important stuff.

Thanks for caring,
L.

Sadmo,

Thanks. Other than get prepared, there isn't much t/d but wait.

As of midnight (7 minutes ago):

[color:"blue"]AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
1200 AM HST WED AUG 15 2007

.SYNOPSIS...A TROPICAL STORM WARNING AND A FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAIN
IN EFFECT FOR THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII...AS TROPICAL STORM FLOSSIE
CONTINUES TO TRACK WEST NORTHWEST...AWAY FROM THE ISLAND. EXPECT
WINDY CONDITIONS AND POSSIBLE HEAVY RAIN TO LINGER OVER THE BIG
ISLAND THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING...ESPECIALLY OVER THE KAU AND PUNA
DISTRICTS. THE CENTER OF FLOSSIE IS STILL EXPECTED TO PASS SOUTH OF
THE REST OF THE ISLANDS FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. FLOSSIE/S
IMPACT ON THE OTHER ISLANDS WILL MAINLY BE HIGH SURF ALONG SOUTH AND
EAST SHORES AND GUSTY WINDS.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
FLOSSIE HAS WEAKENED SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE PAST FEW HOURS...AND CPHC
HAS DOWNGRADED IT TO A TROPICAL STORM IN THE 11 PM HST BULLETIN. IN
FACT...THE HURRICANE WATCH HAS BEEN CANCELED. THERE IS STILL A GOOD
AREA OF HEAVY RAIN HOVERING OFF THE COAST OF SOUTHEAST BIG ISLAND.
HENCE THE POTENTIAL STILL EXISTS FOR FLOODING TO OCCUR ON THE BIG
ISLAND AS TRAILING MOISTURE FROM FLOSSIE SPREAD AROUND THE AREA.
HENCE THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT AT TIME.

So for now the word is that it is considered a tropical storm. The Hurricane watch has been canceled. Our area may get a bit more wind and rain Wednesday morning. It's about midnight now.

Will it strengthen after it passes the islands? Not sure. Got a gut feeling.....but that's just me. For now it looks like wind and rain. Mary Poppins ain't coming by too soon.

Aloha,
L.

Thanks Jim but we are ok. Not sure if I want to move inland. LOL!!

As for us out here, well the hurricane is a tropical storm with little rain so far. The Big Island got some rain but nothing like what is getting dumped on Texas. Right now our island is battling a 6700 acre fire. I think it is almost 75% contained. That one closed the schools on both sides of the mountain range. Few homes were evacuated and some forest reserves are damaged. The steep terrain and residual winds from Flossie isn't helping. Since we didn't get much rain, most of Oahu's firefighters (or so I hear) have been working in shifts fighting this huge fire.

Still we are doing ok. The fire is on the island we live on but not near our homes.

We were put on a tsunami warning earlier today (after the Peru earthquake). They have since removed the tsunami warning. The schools on the Big Island will reopen tomorrow and the cruise ship Pride of Aloha was able to dock in Hilo today.

Now our attention is turned to the gulf and Peru. More hurricane's in the making and earthquakes galore. Makes one wonder what's next are we really living in the last days? Hm..........

Be safe!

Hi Orchid,

So how do you compare earthquake, hurricane, fire and tsunami havoc with the devastation wreaked by an affair?

Just wondering.

Thanks for the updates.

Ace

P.S. I agree with your 'last days' musing....but how long is that reference to 'days' in actual real time? Who knows?

Don't forget "40 days of rain".

I don't mean to speak for Orchid, but... It's definately the scars from the A you rememeber the more.

Orchid, are locusts next on the list for us? lol

Blessings to all.

No, I meant the literal stuff. We've had it, just didn't hit enough of the land t/d major damage.

The A stuff is also devastating. Most don't know until they have been through it. Survival is possible. So it is wise to be prepared and act decisively.

As for the last days.... there's a book that talks about it. Doesn't give the date just the timeframe and we are in it. The big question is what happens after that. But that's a whole.....'nuther subject.

take care,
L.
