I've looked thru the FAQ's but can't find instructions how to post a link to a thread. Can someone give me step by step instructions or point me to where I can that info?

Thanks!

Draft your message (except for the link data) as you normally would and click on the "Continue" button. (Make sure you have the option "Preview Reply" box checked.)

When the system shows you the "Preview Post" screen, scroll down past all the smiley faces and the text box labeled "Post" until you see the "Instant Graemlins" and the "Instant UBB Code" box. Click on "URL" and follow the onscreen prompts to insert the necessary data.

Once finished, click on "Continue" again (making sure you have the "I want to preview my post" box checked and the system shows you how the URL link will appear in your message. If you're satisfied with the result, click on "Ok, submit" and you're finished. If not satisfied, correct as appropriate until you are. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

mvg,

Email me if you'd like the cut 'n paste way to insert a link. I've never used the method Longhorn suggested but I will now. I knew there must be another way.

LONGHORN....I wanted to tell you THANKS for always being so helpful, especially to newbies. You made a tremendous impact on me back in May when you validated a comment I said (in fear and trembling) when there was a hot discussion about A marriages. You said 3 words "like Ace said" and it made me feel like I was a part of the solution (this board belongs to the Harleys, we are their guests, and may choose to abide by their rules....or not.)

I know you probably don't remember it, but I will never forget.

Thank you,

Ace

Yes, once you see and analyze the format for a URL link, there's a way to do it from keyboard entry, but one step at a time. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the kind words, Ace. But, de nada...think nothing of it. We're ALL here to be part of the solution. Keep on with the good work, hear?

Go to the Home page and treat the sig line box like any post.

Oooops, that may not work if the URL box isn't visible.

mvg,

On second thought, since I can't post/email much during the day, it may be faster for Longhorn to lead you through it. If not, I'll dig it up when you email me.

LH,

Curious what made you say this:

Keep on with the good work, hear?

I've been feeling a bit guilty lately with so little time to post ....and I find myself mindlessly on a fun thread for some reason. I even passed the qualifications for membership in Idiotville this week.....a thread that offended me when I first arrived because it seemed to keep pushing my first post down the page ~~~ it took me a while to realize that it was actually threads from past pages or new threads that pushed Newbie posts off the page.)

Just curious what "good work" you might have observed to spur that comment. And yes, Admrtn is one of my top ENs. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Feel free to answer on my Smiles & Trials 2 thread if you have time sometime.

To put something in your "Signature" area, click on "My Home" in the butternut colored bar. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page to where it says "Main Configuration. Click on "Edit" in the box next to "Personal Information." When the new screen comes up, scroll down to "Signature (up to 500 characters...)" and insert whatever you want. (Notice all the other things you can change on this screen.)

-------

Ace, don't parse my words so closely. There's no need because I don't have any hidden agendas. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

To me, if one takes time out of their busy day, spending it here on MB and sincerly trying to help others as one weaves his or her way through their own troubles (as I've seen you do), then one is doing "good works." Doesn't mean we all have to be right all the time...no pressure, okay?...just means you care enough to do what you are able. Can anyone ask for anything more?

LH,
I can't get that to work.
I tried copying and pasting where I'd inserted the link in my response above, just posts the actual url address, not a clickable link.

I don't see anywhere like here where you can do the url address, then the name you want to use for it.

What am I not doing right?
Thanks!

I'm sorry. I think by the time I inserted some things in my signature area, I had become familiar enough with using UBB code that I just typed it out. Here's a work-around.

Open a page in your browser to "My Home" and get to the signature area as above.

Open a second browser page to this thread and type something in the text box as if you were going to reply to this post. Making sure you have "Preview Reply" checked to the left, click on "Continue." From there, construct the URL link as in my earlier post as if you were going to include it in your reply. Then copy the whole URL link (including the label) from the text box, change back to the browser window where you have your personal area open and paste the URL link in the signature box. Now you can simply close the browser window into this thread without clicking "Submit." In your personal area (Signature area), you can click on "Preview" to see if things have gone properly. Save the new URL link in your signature area by clicking "Submit" in THAT browser window and you're all done.

Sorry for the confusion...and I'm doubly sorry for outlining a methodology of getting the job done in such a round-about manner. I'm sure there are better instructions around here somewhere, but I'm not sure where they might be.

Hi Longhorn,

Thought I'd replied to you but just realized I did on a thread you might not have seen.

You posted on Weaver's thread about different long-lost words (plunder, sack and pillage) so I added the following 'intrusion'.... (didn't want you to think I ingnored your suggestion in case you missed my reply on that thread)

Quote
Pardon a second intrusion....Longhorn just said:

Quote
Ace, don't parse my words so closely.

[color:"red"]Parse [/color]

Other than rhyming with [censored]...I have never thought of such a word. (I get your meaning LH, but I have to look it up for specifics.)

Ace <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> (said with a smile!)

P.S. mvg...if you can't get this method to work, email me and I'll forward the directions sent to me....they're long but they worked for me....and I'm a computer idiot. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

LOL It never occurred to me the word "parse" would be so parsed. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Ace, why not go ahead and post those other directions? It'd be interesting to see them.

Hi Longhorn,

I am soooo honored that you asked. I just posted what I think are correct keystroke steps for linking on Mark' Rants for Newbies thread.

I've printed out the directions from my word document and will follow them to link mvg's thread to Mark's.

Here goes:

Linking Keystrokes

Hope this works. (Somehow, I think it will only link to the page, not the specific post. Not sure why....anyone else know? I'm usuall hit an miss with trying to link to a specific post....but it will link to the first post on the page and you can just scroll down.)

Ace

I'm gonna try it again using the Edit button instead of opening up a new MB web site. Maybe this one will link directly to the page as well as the specific post.

Ooops...not gonna work after all....I'll try again.

Let's see if this links to a specific thread page AND post:

Whooo Hoooo! It worked and I think I learned something.

I know, I'm an idiot....that's why I say, "If I can do this, anyone can do it!"

It appears that the directions I posted will work for the PAGE, but most likely will not work for a specific post on that page.

I'm gonna leave it anyhow and hope someone smarter will suggest how to correct my steps.

Hope that works...any thoughts, Longhorn? Y'know, it's ironic that the way I learned to link was posting a call out for you asking 'how to link' that Saturn answered before you did so I changed the call-out to another thread name.

Again, thanks for allllll your help...and you can parse my words as closely as you want to! LOL <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Here's what I did differently the second time when it actually linked to the specific post.

Contrary to what I said on my directions, I went to GQII on the same account and pulled up Mark's thread. Then I put my cursor on the post with the directions and then hit 'edit' but did not change anything.

Immediately following that, I right clicked on the address and noticed that the correct post number appeared when I pasted it.

That would mean that when you use the edit button for linking your own posts, you can link directly to that post. But when you're doing someone else's, it will most likely only link to the page and you'll have to just scroll down to the specific post.

Maybe. I dunno...I'm an idiot, someone help!

Thanks, Ace. Yes, once one is familiar enough with the UBB coding, it goes a lot quicker just to enter the information into an edit box. I do that composing a post because most of the codes are easily remembered. [ i]Text[ /i] will give you italicized text, for instance. If you want bold italicized text, you simply add [ b][ /b] on either side of the affected text.

(In the above examples, I've inserted a space between the bracket and the character in order to make the command show up here. Of course, in actual UBB coding, there is no space.)

So long as you remember to enclose the affected text with the operation you want performed on that text, it doesn't seem to make any difference in what order those operations are initiated. Then you can add colors, etc., etc.

I've never had the need to attempt to insert the exact message number but it does appear one cannot link to another poster's message. I just add an annotation to scroll down to "XXYY's" message, or something to that effect.

Thanks again.
