It's a Southern thing, like muskadines, or as deep south terminology skuppernongs.

They are a bitter berry from swamp bushes that we make jelly with. Heck we make jelly out of everything down here.

Mayhaw jelly was one of the XW's favorite breakfast items.

You can find it anywhere in the little country stores in the deep south.

It's always home made and usually a seasonal item around late August.

It's VERY good and has a unique flavor.

BTW, a possum would be fried along with gator, squirrel and [censored].

As for Muscadines and Scuppernongs, there is a winery in Arlington, GA that uses them. Still Pond Vineyard.

They are actually southern wild grapes that are extremely tart and you can tell that there is sugar added to aid in fermentation.

Thanks Cinderella and Pariah

I'm not a Mayhaw conaseur, it's not popular in South Louisiana, although we do preserve just about everything else just like the South.

I have had muscidines, right off the vine, that'll put a smile on your face!

tart doesn't cover it, there needs to be a new word for those
