Dear Apples, thank you for responding. I'm not very tech savvy,so I am really grateful for help and advice. I had my gmail address for many years, it is the primary ("automatic") email account on my iphone and ipad, as well as the 'user name' on so many sites I log in for admin, purchases, bills, amazon, you name it.
If I closed my current gmail a/c, I am not sure how I would 'replace' the primary email account on cell and pad with another email address, or how this would affect my various online accounts at log-in.
If you or any member would be able to advise, I'd really appreciate it.

here you go!
Gmail users can now block specific email addresses with just two clicks. In the top right hand corner of a message, click the drop-down menu button (upside down triangle), and select "block." (It appears with the name of the sender in quotes.) Any future messages from the blocked addresses will land in the spam folder.Sep 22, 2015

You can sign into your account on each website and change it. You could get the new address and not change until everything is migrated to the new account.

If you want your spouse to receive a mail that it bounced, it can be done. If you google "gmail" and "bounce", you find how to's. It doesn't seem too complicated.
