As mentioned, MBTI looks at prefrences...not how well you would do a job or if you are a push over, an under/over achiever, etc. Say, I was the hiring manager of a company and I knew that out of the four Administrators that were working for me...all of them were ENTJ's; including me. So, I decide I will only hire ENTJ's for Adminstrative positions. That is discrimination. I am not looking at the people I am hiring on their merits...I am looking at an MBTI type. It's like saying I will only hire men who are six foot, are Methodists, and like classical music. What does that have to do with doing a job? HR people are not privy to an employee's MBTI type either. Any trainer worth a salt will tell a company this. Why do you think the training for MBTI is so rigorous? The results of your MBTI are for you. If you want to tell people...the HR person...fine. Giving the MBTI as a prerequisite is illegal and unethical.
As an attorney, you know that there are certain things that are legal and illegal in hiring someone. Yes, if you work in a Nuclear Power Plant, or the FBI...they can ask more questions, but MBTI isn't the assessment they give you. The instruments those organizations give you measure whether or not you have emotional problems, have mental illness, or a personality disorder.
MBTI was developed my a mother and daughter during World War II. Yes, certain personality types sometimes gravitate toward a certain profession, but it has nothing to do with how successful someone will be in that profession.

I took the test about a year ago. My understanding was it was a test to enlighten and make you aware of your own personal way of thinking. It shows your strengths and weaknesses. There is no way that one set of characteristics has any advantage over any other characterictic. It shows you what areas of weakness you could improve. IF YOU CHOOSE to improve it. There are no right or wrong answers. It just provides for personal growth. That it. No more.

The best we can say is that it's perhaps foolish. You can't go around impugning the ethics of every person who doesn't have a perfect understanding of some bit of science.
Congress is not empowered to outlaw stupidity. What they can and did outlaw is discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, and pregnancy. Some of these are even *not* a problem where the characteristic relates to the job. The Catholic Church does *not* have to hire satanist priests.
The government can't *force* me to hire everyone who walks through the door who can *do* the job. All they can say is that *I* can't toss someone out of the hiring pool based on a protected characteristic.
There are plenty of other characteristics that are not protected, and if I don't like your nose ring, tough noogies. Adam Smith's invisible hand says that if you are still the better employee, nose ring and all, my competitor will hire you and those like you and whip my company.

I am fully aware that employers hire who they want. But, if they are smart they don't say, I hate your nose ring, so get lost. All, I am saying is that if someone comes in and is given the MBTI as a prereq and that person knows it is illegal...that company can be sued.
I am not going around impungning anyone's ethics. You asked why the assessment is unethical/illegal. I merely answered. I don't make the rules...I was just sharing the facts.
I don't live and breathe and base my relationships on MBTI. It is a mere assessment. It just bugs me when folks who don't know what it is make generalized false statements about something they really don't know enough about.

Sorry, not wanting to change the subject again, but I wanted to update the original subject..
I received a letter from my STBX yesterday.. to quote a couple of sentences
"I am sorry that I have brought this betrayal into your life and that I have destroyed part of your life" and "I have betrayed you, my children, God, and myself"..
No, this letter wasn't exactly asking for another chance, but I think?? it may have been a locked door being unlocked.. We are back to talking on the phone (I am out of town anyway), and considering seeing each other. Not sure what tomorrow will bring, but I can only take it one day at a time..

INTJ here. Eight years ago I tested as an INFP. I just so happen to be very close to the middle for the F/T and J/P. Still am.
INTJ's are analytical and make good scientists...go figure ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif)
INFP's (supposedly) make good teachers, if I remember right. So, should I go into teaching with my PhD, or should I go into a research lab. Maybe I should do both?

wow... I really don't think STBX would ever admit to making a mistake. He to this day says he is better off just erasing our time together and starting over. I told him he is taking the easy way out, that the girls and I are working to preserve our family and trying to get over the dysfunctional parts of our lives, that it is going to take time and effort on all our parts. We are doing hard work to make us better, he is just up and leaving.Yes, I invited him to rebuild with us, but he refuses and brings up new divorce issues.
Lori
