I am ready to leave my husband, but in our state, you must remain separate for 18 mo. unless you have "grounds". I have a credit card in my name only, and he has one in his only (We both had these before the marriage, I don't have a copy of his, don't have my name on the account) A friend told me that I could end up owing 1/2 of the full balance on HIS card, which has $10K limit, simply because I am his current spouse. Is there anything to be done for protection?

You need to contact an attorney and find out the specific laws in your state. Filing for a legal separation may protect you.
------------------
Pain is a given, misery is optional.

Martindale-Hubbell Lawyer Search
If you need to protect yourself legally (and/or financially)... I usually make the recommendation of finding a good attorney. A good place to start off is at the Martindale-Hubbell Lawyer Search site. Do a search within your county... look for only "family law" specialists(>80% in divorce/custody/etc.)... make sure they do a lot of "family law committee work"... if they know the judges all the better... You can normally find a few that will give initial counseling free of charge.
USLaw.com (an alternative search site)
To be honest...
...the expenses you both have... you'll probably have to share them.
BTW... the divorce itself will cost a bit...
...if there is abuse... do protect yourself!
[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]
Jim
