Friday evening at my son's soccer practice, I got a big promotion - from soccer mom to assistant to the assistant coach.
Came at a good time for the team. Assistant coach couldn't make it to the game. Head coach arrived right on time for the game. But, I was there to warm the guys up and head them to the field when the ref called for them.
But I think the boys, U10 level, are mystified about a mom on the field in practice. I can do drills with them if they need another person. I can scrimmage and play in the goal. But I do believe the boys think this is weird. I've heard them whispering, "That's Nate's mom."

How does Nate feel? I told the kids that I did this for that I was the only one available and that if I didn't do it they would not get to play unless they could find someone else's parent to do it. So basically it was me or nothing. They did appreciate it and thanked me at the end of the season. It was 14U boys I did it for. And my son was very proud that his mom would do that as I knew nothing about soccer, I could do drills and tried to make them fun.
Do the best job that you can do and remember that you are doing it so that the kids can play.
Watch out for the slide tackles, they hurt!!
Dawn
Congrats on the promotion!!! If they ever do that to me, I may lay there for a while. So far I can't decide if they think I'm cool or crazy. Sunday they had another game and I had to start them warming up. It's kind of weird to be there before the real coaches. I do usually stand around unless the real guys need me for something. I can do drills or play to even up a team. Not a problem.
I think Nate likes it. He grins when I ask about it - usually.

cinderella,
I have a friend that is a woman and she is a better coach that most men. She has earned the respect of everyone on her team and the other teams. She can coach soccer or basketball and her teams usually lead because she has talent when it comes to organizing plays at practice that a lot of men just don't have.
I look forward to hearing when you are promoted to head coach. JE, wow head coach.
it is amazing how many moms are coaching now a days, haven't had to do yet but come close.
we had a baseball game in Singapore last yr that all the coaches were gone, so we started drafting dads, poor kids they never had the same group of coaches for a game, pratice more than twice I think, but they had a great time & I guess in the long run, that is what is important

Keep a record, I might need some pointers this summer. The little league form came out and I x'd the 'any help' box instead of the 'snacks' box.
Women can do anything.

We go, girls!!!!
For softball last year, I learned to keep the stats book. And I ran the scoreboard one day. I can repair the uniforms.
I am seriously not an athlete. No killer instinct. What can I say? I try hard. I don't think I could run softball practice. Can't bat, can't throw. But I can kick a soccer ball.
Now, what is it we need men for? Hmmmmmmmmm, oh yeah, SF!
