To all who are even a little familiar with my situation, I have found myself a job!
I live on an island in NYS and I am fairly far away from centers of technology, making it tough to find a job as computer programmer, but living on an island makes it easier to find a job on a ferryboat.
I worked for this ferry company during my college years and did not like it at all. It is pretty mind numbing and after the 3rd round trip, you've done all you are ever going to do and seen all you are ever going to see, but it is income.
I am glad to have it and wish I had taken this step earlier, but as you all know, sometimes during this process we do not always do what is best.
Thanks all who have followed my story so far, I will kepp you posted!
thanks, vb
[ May 15, 2002: Message edited by: vb_guy ]

vbg,
Congratulations!
I know it's not the job you wanted, but at least it's something to do - and some money.
Good luck to you,

Congratulations!! There is much to be said for having the money to pay the bills.
I guess you just keep looking?
I'm back at the job search, myself. When I let myself admit how much I dislike my current job - asking the same questions repeatedly to unemployed people - I know it's time to start that job search again.

Congrads on the job..
I take it the ferry is for commuters??
If so maybe it's a way to make some contacts into the job you'd like to have??
Being a programmer, maybe someone you see everyday knows of unlisted job positions in their company??
Or maybe they have computers in which they need fixed, and you can do that on the side??
Does the company you work for now have computers? if not maybe you can create a program that will help their business?? creating a niche for yourself in that business..
Maybe take some pictures of the area that you could use to create a webpage..when did they start..how long they have been in business, is there a history to the company, ie: included in the local history of the town and community which would draw tourist to the area? bringing the company more profits because of tourist..
Just some things to think about..

vb_guy -
I responded to your post, but it never appeared. Anyway, I had to laugh at your signature line that said "her heart was frozen into a block of ice".
I have said that to my H on more than one occassion. Even asked him what that beating sound was.
I guess that is a love buster, but it is interesting to know that others have that same problem.

Hi everyone!:
You are all correct, this is NOT the job I wanted, but I felt as if I had failed in keeping my career on track, until I remembered something;
When I was 7 or 8 or 9 I was an altar boy at my local parish, and there was some very big thing happening, a High Mass , or something, with the Bishop of our Diocese and Angels and I think that God made a personal appearance.
Well, I was the youngest, and the most junior altar boy, so I had the smallest job to do. While all of the other altar boys got to carry candles in long holders with red globes and were very important all I got to carry was the little brass cup with incense in it. Well, I was ANGRY! “Give ME the least important job! I HATE THIS…I WANT OUT of the altar boys, now!!! “. After Mass, people asked my mother what was bothering me!
Well, I was 8 or so, so I will give myself a break for my attitude back then. But I am no longer 8, I am 37 and it is time to try and take the long view. No, I do not like this job, yes, I would prefer to be working as a programmer, but I am WORKING……. HOORAY for ME!! I am thankful I have anything at all! God Bless Us, Everyone!
ThornedRose, you are a psychic! I have had that very idea. I am going to write a program, which will let the ferry company schedule crew and boats more easily, and I will see how that works out. The company is OLD…maybe 230 years? Been around awhile!
AbandonedDad, Cinderella, Family Man, and prayingforpeace:
Thank you for responding to me. Seeing responses to my posts always helps me feel less alone, as someone else on the BB once wrote. I count you all as friends and I hope that your lives, both personal and professional turn out to be better than you could have dreamed.
Thank you all, again, vb

vb_guy:
I've been pretty wrapped up in my own problems lately, but wanted to chime in here and note how much better things are going for you!
Yeah, jobs like that don't seem very rewarding (I've had to do stuff like that in down years), but they pay the bills and give you something to do to distract you from the problems.
Good luck to you!

Hi VB guy,
I, too, am in the IT industry. It is difficult. Where I am at there are no jobs either. I have ended up coming to the conclusion to sell my house and go where the jobs are. Not sure if that is an option for you but it was and is for me.
Hang in there. I am doing a job way below my skills too. Sometimes we have to have the valleys to enjoy the peaks. I am praying for you.
