The kids and I were cleaning the basement family room yesterday morning when my son discovered something growing on a wood book shelf. I immediately determined that it had gotten wet and swelled up. I felt the carpert and there was one wet spot.

So before I yelled at the kids for spilling something, I pulled up the carpet and found wet padding and moldy nailing strip.

I first though I was getting water infiltration through the foundation but it didn't make sense. So I move the ceiling tiles and found my problem.

My main drian form the second floor bathroom is and has been leaking. I could actually see water running down the pipe.

The flooring around the pipe is all rotted away. I imagine that the insulation behind the wall is soggy too. I called a plumber and my insurance company. The plumber is supposed to come out Fri since it was not an emergency.

This looks expensive, they will have to determine where the leak is, second floor?, first floor? Extent of damage to wood structures, carpet and padding.

Not sure how much of this insurance will cover. I had thought about replacing carpert and repainting basement but decided to wait since I bought the kids a new computer and can't afford it right now.

Now I guess I won't have a choice. I also need winter tires for the car!

I guess I will have to do some more creative financing! I don't need to retire anyways!

OOOOHHHHH!!! Not good news. My mom was out of state for several weeks. When she returned, she found her basement flooded, her floors soggy, her carpets mildewed, her PLASTER soggy - not drywall, all sorts of things. She ended up gettting her carpets removed, hardwood floors refinished, walls painted, all sorts of work done on her house. I think she is still living with some residual effects. But it didn't cost her a lot.

Doesn't help your situation, I know. And I know this is not fun. But, we've survived worse.

I really know what you mean by creative financing. This week I realized that it is a good thing the children will be gone for a week. My budget is TIGHT - and I won't have to pay to feed, transport, and entertain them. Let their dad do it for a few days.

You know what, Bob? Welcome to life.

Just when you THINK you're getting ahead, life throws a little whammy at you. The way you titled this, and owning 3 dogs and all, I thought you found a little PILE as a "present." Oh well...at least it's not literally cr*p, just financially.

We had a very similar thing happen in our upstairs bathroom. The tiles kept coming up, so we peeled away some of the flooring and underflooring and there was a leak. It turned out the pipe into the showerhead had a leak and had rotted away pipe and wall and OY VEY! Anyway, we used the opportunity to bash in walls with a hammer...and since we were installing new plumbing anyway, we installed a jacuzzi bathtub/shower.

Maybe you can use this as an opportunity to do some remodeling you were half way thinking of anyway. Make lemons out of lemonade or something like that, huh?? heehee

RWD - yep, that sure is an ugly situation, . But at least the mess will be fixed, and then you know that the rug will have no mold, and etc.

X and I have been living in this house for 13 years. And since about 8 years ago, there was this leak that just kept leaking and leaking. Well, it finally got fixed a few months ago, after there has been mold in the walls. And for years I had a bucket from the second floor leak to the first floor, the bucket was placed on the file cabinet to catch the leak.

And of course X didn't fix it, I hired a guy to fix the situation. Hon, there are so many things that some guys are good at doing, and so many things that we depend on our husbands, and it doesn't get done. I for one know, that my husband could depend on me to get anything done around the house. He could depend on me to file things, look things up, call people, the list goes on. I am so well at this, and I asked him for years to fix the leak, but it was never placed high on the list.

Now we are to fix things ourselves, or hire it done. But that is what divorce creates, where we have to fend for ourselves, and service men really prey on us women. It is a known fact.

But look at it in one positive way. The leak is going to get fixed.

What scared me the most was I called a friend of mine that can do all kinds of construction work and when I explained to him what happened, he said call a professional!

Bob - look at the bright side - if you ask the pipe if it's leaking, it won't lie to you!

Bob: Pipe, is that water coming from you?

Pipe: Just friends.

I beg to differ. I believe the conversation would be more like this:

Bob: Pipe, is that water coming from you?

Pipe: Why do you always accuse me of leaking? Can you PROVE I'm leaking?? Don't you TRUST ME?? I'm tired of your snooping! Who do you think you are anyway, always interrupting my privacy. Am I allowed to even LOOK at water, or do I have to be dry now? I WORK with the water...that's all! And you have to turn it into a LEAK. Just because I like the way the water feels and sounds, doesn't mean I'm leaking!! We aren't doing anything wrong! I'm leaving. I'm going to find a house that doesn't not accuse me of leaking all the time! DON'T wait up for me!!

(assuming its a female pipe of course)

I had a similar situation recently, but it ended up being the Vent pipe through the roof.but it looked like bathroom plumbing leaking. Tar dried out and cracked around pipe through roof. Real simple fix for me atleast
