If you need to <B>protect</B> yourself legally (and/or financially)... I usually make the recommendation of finding a <B>good</B> attorney. A good place to start off is at the <A HREF="http://lawyers.martindale.com/marhub/form/by.html" TARGET=_blank>Martindale-Hubbell Lawyer Search</A> site. Do a search within your county... look for only "family law" specialists(>80% in divorce/custody/etc.)... make sure they do a lot of "family law committee work"... if they know the judges all the better... I would suggest that you 'interview' at least 2 -3 attorneys before deciding on one. Most of the reputable ones will provide an initial consultation free of charge. When I met with the first one, she gave me a lot of valuable information pertaining to the state we live in. Before I saw her, I sat down and chronologically listed everything I'd been through, then some of the pertinent facts, such as length of marriage, employment info, assets, etc. I was an emotional basket case so this really helped to have everything written down beforehand so that I didn't forget anything.<P>The second attorney I saw supposedly did most of his work through the internet and when I met with him, I could see why. He was ICKY!! The only reason I picked him is because he was supposed to be an expert on military divorces. Well, I had done some research on my own and I questioned him on a few things. He became somewhat defensive and tried to blow me off by philibustering for about 10 minutes nonstop. One of the answers he gave me was plain and simply wrong.<P>Don't be intimidated and don't be afraid to question them to see if they know their stuff. Your future could be in their hands.
